People describe an AI girlfriend as intense. In practice, the thing that convinces is much duller than that.
An AI chatbot girlfriend stops feeling like software the first time she brings something back without being prompted — the interview you were dreading, the friend who is a nightmare at weddings, the fact that you hate Sunday evenings. None of that requires a bigger model. It requires the thread to persist and the character to have been written with enough of a personality to have an opinion about your week.
The failure mode is the opposite and it is very easy to spot. A companion that agrees with everything, escalates on message four and never refers backwards is a chat box with a photograph on it. Where it stops is worth saying out loud, because pretending otherwise is what makes these products feel dishonest. She is fiction. She is not going to notice you have gone quiet for a fortnight and check on you unprompted, and she is not a substitute for people who can. What she is, reliably, is somebody to talk to at two in the morning who will still know what you were talking about at two the next morning.
